Card How-to, Cardmaking

Day Four: Santa Gnome Card

Holiday Card Series

On Day Four of the Holiday Card Series, I’m making that list and checking it twice to bring you this fun card featuring a Santa Gnome. I wanted to play with some layers when I was creating this card and I used several different ways to add dimension to this project.

This card actually started back when I first saw the supplies. I fell in love with both the Santa Hat Background and the Gnomies stamp set from Photoplay stamps. When companies release their products, they do so with the intention of having their items coordinate. Its no surprise that I paired the two stamps together and saw that they would work well together.

I first made a textured brick panel using a stencil to act as a back drop for my Santa Gnome. Sometimes background with large patterns can be distracting and I didn’t want my Santa to get lost. I kept the brick simple and white so that my colored image would pop against it.

Next, I worked on the background and colored my Santa hats with white. It wasn’t until I had the entire card put together that I felt like the background fell, well, flat. The texture of the brick and the popping up of images with foam tape really added to the dimensional aspect of the card, and made the background feel out of place. I went back with makers to add the shadows and that made all the difference.
